You don't need a sunrise alarm or a 12-mile itinerary to fall in love with this valley. Some of the most memorable views in Jackson Hole are an hour — or less — from trailhead to trailhead. Whether you're a longtime local looking for a quick reset after work or you're weighing what life here might actually feel like, these short hikes are the best introduction to why people never really leave once they've lived under these mountains.

Here are our favorites, ranked from easiest to most rewarding.

1. Taggart Lake & Bradley Lake Loop

~5.5 miles round trip, easy to moderate

This is the classic Jackson Hole short hike, and for good reason. The trail winds through a lodgepole forest that regenerated after a 1985 fire, opens into meadows, and delivers you to two glacier-carved lakes with the Tetons rising straight out of the water. Do both lakes if you have the time — Bradley first, then loop back past Taggart on your return.

Best for: first-time visitors, families, anyone who wants maximum payoff for moderate effort.

2. Hidden Falls & Inspiration Point

~2 miles round trip from the Jenny Lake boat dock, moderate (rocky and steady climbing)

Take the shuttle boat across Jenny Lake, then climb a short, rugged trail to a roaring waterfall and, just beyond it, a rocky overlook with sweeping views back across the lake to the valley floor. This is one of the most popular hikes in the park, so go early or take the last boat of the day if you want the trail to yourself.

Best for: visitors who want the iconic Teton view without a full backcountry commitment.

3. Phelps Lake Loop via the Lake Creek & Woodland Trail

2–7 miles depending on how far you go, easy to moderate

Starting at the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve Center, this hike moves through fragrant pine and aspen forest before opening onto Phelps Lake. The Preserve limits parking to keep the trail uncrowded, so it tends to feel quieter than other Grand Teton trailheads even in peak season.

Best for: a slower, more contemplative hike — good for a morning when you want stillness over spectacle.

4. Lunch Tree Hill

~1 mile round trip, easy

A short climb near Jackson Lake Lodge leads to a high point overlooking Willow Flats, with the Tetons framing the whole scene. Keep an eye out for moose in the flats below. Afterward, walk into the lodge for a bite at the Pioneer Grill — this is as close to a "hike and lunch" outing as it gets.

Best for: an easy morning outing with kids, or anyone short on time but not on scenery.

5. Colter Bay Lakeshore Trail

~2 miles round trip, easy and flat

A gentle, family-friendly loop along Jackson Lake with consistent views of the Teton Range across the water. Because it's flat and short, it's a good option for hikers of any age or fitness level, and it pairs well with a visit to the Colter Bay Visitor Center.

Best for: families with young kids or anyone wanting an easy, low-commitment walk.

6. Josie's Ridge

~3.4 miles round trip, moderate (real elevation gain)

Just outside downtown Jackson, this trail climbs quickly to a viewpoint over the town and valley that few other hikes can match. If you want more, it connects directly to the Snow King trail system for additional mileage.

Best for: locals who want a legitimate workout with a payoff view, without leaving town.

7. String Lake to Leigh Lake Shoreline

2–5 miles round trip depending on distance, easy

A flat, easy walk along the shore of Leigh Lake with clear views of Mount Moran reflected in the water. You can turn around whenever you like, which makes this one of the most flexible hikes on this list — perfect for a spontaneous evening outing.

Best for: an easy-breezy summer evening hike, especially with a picnic.

A Few Notes Before You Go

• Bear spray is not optional. This is bear country, and most of these trails pass through prime habitat. Carry it, know how to use it, and make noise on blind corners.
• Parking fills early. Jenny Lake, Taggart Lake, and String Lake trailheads are often full by mid-morning in summer. Aim to arrive before 8am or plan a later afternoon start.
• Afternoon storms roll in fast. Especially in July and August — start early if you're headed toward any exposed viewpoint.
